A throwback at 1996 and my first wargaming army
Well, it's time to kickstart, the hobby blog with some hobbying content.
As a first hobby article, I thought it was appropriate to showcase my first ever army. If you remember my previous post, my entry point to the hobby, was through the pages of White Dwarf. I was so captivated by the huge battle report on the magazine, that from then on I knew what to do! I was going to collect a massive Orc and Goblin army, like the one featured in the magazine.
I showed the magazine to a like minded friend and sure enough, before I got any orcs on my stash, my friend was already collecting them... Long story short, I grudginly went for the high elves. My High Elf army was never completed. Shields are missing and the banners were never printed, but there it is. Hobby time was scarce and I could play with them anyway.
Here are my first ever wargaming miniatures in all their glory. Painted by a teenager (at the time) who had never, not even once, painted anything. Ah yes... that 1/144 Sea Harrier I mentioned in the last post, never got through the assembly phase.
As a hobby novice at the time, funds were scarce, so I opted for a flat count of 15 figures per unit. It sounded like a manageable amount and on top of that, points wise, High Elves were quite expensive, so a small unit represented an effective fighting force on the battlefield.
Hope you like them. Here's the army´s overview in all its glossy finish glory (ouch). Not the most impressive sight, I agree, but hey, I am not the most prolific painter.
Some close up shots:
High Elf lord on Dragon
Great eagles
Bolt thrower
Horse chariot
15 swordmasters of Hoeth
15 spearmen led by a battle mage
15 white lions
11 seamasters
High Elf lord on steed
The elf lord on steed holds a special place in my colection, as my first ever painted mini.
Some more group pictures:
There it is. My first ever wargaming army, ready to take on the enemies of the old world. Maybe one day I will gather the pace to finish it up.
What was your first army? Let me know in the comments section below.
Until then, keep on painting.
War Penguin signing out.
